I can tell you why because nobody wants to spend $1000-$1300 on a mini split when they got cut holes in their walls to mount them. Especially when the house is a Victorian style house built in a late 1800s. Or they have a landlord that says do not tear up or cut holes in my house.

these aren't exactly DIY machines most of the time. you have to consider the electrical component to it and if you want to run more than one of them which most people do you will have to have a 220 v outlet. they're really only cold enough to do one room. also, the freon hose that runs from the base to the Head often cracks and the freon is not cheap.

I’ve got a window unit I paid $50 at Walmart, keeps my room cool all summer. In winter I take it out and put it in the garage. It’s not loud. I didn’t need to cut a hole in my wall or run a drain line. No tools, put it in the window and plug it in.
