I was born in Texas in the 80s. When getting my passport they wouldn’t accept my short form birth certificate unless I went and got a new long form one from the state. I had to fly to get a new one and provide other documents. My family has been here since our ancestors were enslaved here. It’s because of what she’s explaining that they didn’t trust my birth certificate or citizenship.

Dealing with this rn with one of my clients - born in the 60s, parents never formally registered her as a U.S. citizen. Trying to get her a passport but the administration wants an affidavit from her parents… who have passed. She has to start a residency application from scratch :/

Happened to us at my husbands immigration appt. They gave us 24 hours to provide "proof of birth via midwife" thankfully my mother still had footprint ink paper, initial vaccination paperwork & pictures of her pregnant IN TX. They issued my husband GC 1 week ltr.
