Yes! Finding safety and belonging is what most people enjoy about religion.

Wow, no this is not it. strongly disagree that the harm is named and accountability taken in spiritual communities — I also very much disagree that secularism gives them no other option. The secular world gives people many chances at paths back — we don’t have any real cancel culture. Shia has continued to say and do horrendous things — where exactly is the accountability?

the other option is to be sincerely sorry. People can identify sincerity, if you want to become better, and it shows through your words and actions you can almost always redeem yourself in the eyes of society.

This is transformative justice! Learning about this thru the activism work I do with Sunrise Movement. Thank you for identifying the really urgent need we have to make this more widespread.

A path to redemption always has to be available, as the transgressions intensify that path can get narrower and more demanding but it should never completely disappear. 💛

A book that helped me think through this: We will Not Cancel Us by adrienne maree brown. It’s more of a booklet- quick easy read.

Secularism does provide a path. The path is that if he stops his problematic behavior, people will recognize that and forgive him. He can also reach out to people outside of religion for help.

how do we balance this with the notion that forgiveness and repentence only benefits the perpetrator, not the victims?

This is why we need to start using restorative justice! There is a path forward it’s just hard and not used enough.

Open to hearing about indigenous practices that bring a perpetrator back into community. I’ve had friends who had SA allegations and it’s taught me that holding humanity in different people is complicated. And of course I want to support victims.

This! When it comes to our criminal justice system as a whole, we are failing people. There are definitely people who deserve to be in jail for the rest of their lives, but statistically many of the crimes are things such as drug and alcohol crimes that could be helped with rehabilitation. Many of these people are locked up and forgot, forgotten about instead of being helped.
