as a Norwegian, Swedish is the easiest to understand, but danish is the easiest to read 😆🫶

I usually describe Danish pronunciation as: "Start a word strong and then lose interest halfway through"

Norwegian also has tonal variations. One example is «bønner» can mean both prayers and beans depending on emphasis.

In Norwegian, bokmål is a written language though, not a spoken language, just a side note to confuse people even more 😂

As a Swede that is fluent in Danish i think that Swedish, Norwegian and Danish are more or less the same languages only with extreamly different dialects. When I learned Danish it took less than a week to understand it as soon as i really started to listen, and about three months to speak it fluently.

I would recommend learning Icelandic first, then you can learn the Scandinavian languages very easily.

Fun fact: Technically Norwegian is more closely related to Icelandic and Faroese than to Swedish and Danish. Swedish and Danish belong to the East Scandinavian branch and the others to the West Scandinavian branch. And one way to tell the difference is that Norwegian has three grammatical genders, like Icelandic and Faroese, while Swedish and Danish have two.

Yea I feel like Finnish is the odd one out. 😅 When trying to understand it, you really don't have any use or help from the other Nordic languages. Maybe Swedish, but it only helps with understanding certain words. It linguistically has very little use in understanding Finnish. It is frustrating tbh. Being able to understand some Swedish helps with both Danish and Norwegian regarding understanding. Speaking them understandably when knowing only one of them is a very different story obviously. 😅
