Why are African traditional religions often treated as something strange, primitive, or impossible to understand? 🤔 In the book West African Traditional Religion, Kofi Asare Opoku writes that religion is “at the root of African culture” and that, in traditional Africa, “religion is life and life, religion.” In other words, religion is not separate from daily life. It is present in family, farming, birth, death, morality, community, nature, ancestry, and how people understand both this world and the next. But Africa is not one vague spiritual category. It is home to many people, languages, histories, cosmologies, and religious worlds. So when we can, we should name the tradition we are actually speaking about, whether thats Ìṣẹ̀ṣe, Ifá-Orisa, Akom, Vodou, Candomblé, or another system entirely. These are living traditions, still practised by millions today. We go into this in MUCH more detail on our Substack, including why terms like “paganism” and “polytheism” can be misleading, and some of the shared features found across many African traditional religions.
