As their population grew, they separated—some Ewes moved to the Volta Region of Ghana, while some Gas moved to Accra. The Gas who remained were led by a prince named Ayi, while those who migrated were led by a king. After the king’s death, messengers were sent to Ayi to return and take the throne. However, Ayi, who had already become a leader among the people he lived with, refused.
