FOR CHOIRMASTERS AND MUSIC DIRECTORS HOLY WEEK LITURGICAL NOTES 1. THE ABERRATION OF USING TRIUMPHAL ENTRY-THEMED SONGS FOR THE POST-PROCESSION (SECOND)ASPECT OF PALM/PASSION SUNDAY. Over the years, choirmasters and song selectors have tended to reserve certain hymns like SALEM'S PLAIN, RIDE ON IN MAJESTY, HOSANNA, SWEET HOSANNA etc exclusively for Palm/Passion Sunday. That in itself is perfectly appropriate. The only problem is that those hymns are often allocated to the later parts of the Mass, especially Communion, thereby failing to take into cognisance the dual nature of the day's liturgy, and by extension, whether songs would still be appropriate for those parts of the Mass or not. The 1988 Easter liturgical document PASCHALE SOLEMNITATIS explains the dual aspect of Palm/Passion Sunday in articles 28 and 32: "28. Holy Week begins on Passion (or Palm) Sunday, which joins the foretelling of Christ’s regal triumph and the proclamation of the passion. The connection between both aspects of the paschal mystery should be shown and explained in the celebration and catechesis of this day." "32. During the procession, the choir and people should sing the chants proposed in the Ro man Missal, especially Psalms 23 and 46, as well as other appropriate songs in honour of Christ the King." According to the first quoted passage, the dual aspects are "Christ's regal triumph", and "the proclamation of the passion." We are further expected to highlight these two different aspects of the preparation for Easter in how the day's celebration unfolds: for the choir, in the choice of songs selected for either aspect, so as not to cause any ambiguity, confusion or overlapping of liturgical themes. The second passage goes the extra mile of stating in clear terms the aspect of the celebration which songs such as the ones listed at the beginning of this writeup are exclusively for: the procession. This is because after the procession, focus shifts to the second aspect, which is the proclamation of the passion. With this shift in focus comes an attendant change in the mood of the celebration. Pomp and pargeantry gives way to sombreness. Article 33 of the PASCHALE SOLEMNIT
