a few things i want to clarify about your Mother’s Day flowers/bouquets: my focus here is the global industrial flower trade, specifically imported flowers bred for mass retail and extended shelf life. this generally does not apply to most local seasonal flower farms. we are literally entering peak local flower season right now across much of the US, and it’s one of the best times of year to support growers in your own region. the first three flowers in this video were included because of how chemically intensive conventional production can be. a 2016 european pesticide residue study found roses carried more pesticide residues than any other flower tested, averaging 14 pesticide residues per bouquet, with one bouquet containing 32 separate pesticides. european consumer testing also found pesticide residues in every chrysanthemum bouquet tested, including chemicals linked to cancer, endocrine disruption, reproductive harm, and neurological harm. here are some widely used postharvest chemicals: silver thiosulfate (sts) to suppress ethylene response so flowers don’t wilt during shipping. 8-hydroxyquinoline to kill microbes and extend vase life. aluminum sulfate to improve water uptake in stems. this list doesn’t even include the fungicides, insecticides, nematicides, and growth regulators used during production itself. i mentioned the “parkinson’s belt” intentionally. agricultural chemical exposure is increasingly being studied in relation to parkinson’s disease and neurological harm, especially in farming regions and industrial section of the country. a french court recognized a florist’s daughter’s leukemia as linked to prenatal exposure to chemically treated flowers handled during pregnancy. research from ecuador, colombia, and kenya has shown elevated rates of respiratory illness, miscarriages, skin disorders, neurological symptoms, and pesticide poisoning among flower workers. the second half of the video shifts toward boycott and sourcing. i support bds, and part of my own practice as a florist means avoiding flower varieties and breeding systems tied to israeli settlement economies and occupied land. that includes commercial waxflower production in the occupied golan heights. and companies like danziger, which was founded on the ruins of a depopulated Plstnn village called Bayt Dajan, have enormous influence over global ornamental plant genetics, including baby’s breath, limonium, hypericum, anemones, and countless other florist crops. i think we all deserve to know more about that system than we currently do. #mothersday
