At Montréal–Trudeau International Airport, air traffic control is generally divided into different roles. There are dedicated controllers who handle aircraft in the air (approach and tower), as well as ground controllers who manage aircraft movements on taxiways and runways. This division allows each controller to focus on a specific task, which increases precision and safety. In contrast, at very busy airports such as those in New York, it can happen that a single controller is responsible for both airborne and ground communications. This situation is partly due to a shortage of air traffic controllers in the United States, which sometimes requires roles to be combined. As a result, controllers may have to manage multiple responsibilities at the same time, even in high-traffic environments.
