I had a music teacher use bandaids when teaching rhythm and humming when I was in grade school in the 1970’s. It really is a teaching tool.

You have to build the muscles in your lips to play brass or wind wood instruments. Our band instructor said that kissing was the best exercise. When parents got mad about that, he had us use bandaids. I played French horn, which has tiny mouthpiece. I switched to trumpet in college and it paid for almost all my tuition.

This was a normal exercise in orchestra when I was in school. It was part of training and made me a better, more passionate violin player. It was not for punishment. Punishment was just leaving the class if we were not paying attention. Punishment was not being first or second chair for not rehearsing enough. We also practiced learning to tune our instruments with our eyes covered. I dunno, I’m still alive.

I think you’ve missed a bigger concern. This speaks volumes about the superintendent leadership. I would be verrry concerned why leaders have allowed this issue to be so muddled. If they can’t handle this appropriately that says a lot about their ability to deal with other issues. As a parent, I would have HUGE concerns about the leadership. A failing leader in your district will have considerable impact on your children’s education. I would be very loud about why this has been so confusing Thats a concern that affects every child, parent and teacher. The bandaid issue is emblematic and a tiny issue compared to the bigger issues of the leadership’s failure.

Further investigating needs to be done… if it was a training exercise then ok but in today’s times a letter needs to be sent home to advise parents, if it was done as punishment then it is not acceptable.

tbh I think its a creative way to make kids be quiet and also pay attention to the music. When I look back at my childhood me and my classmates would of loved it idk😂
