Me as a first year anesthesia resident 😅 like how come all of a sudden everyone expects me to be able to get any IV?! The nurses have decades of experience!!

Never let anyone know you are good at ultrasound guided IVs- they will call you about every “tough” stick

I had a patient request that a doctor do their IV. I reminded the patient that the doctor probably hasn’t done one since med school years ago and i do IVs on a daily basis but would page the doctor if they insisted…guess who let me do the IV

In Australia , barely any nurses do ivcs and it’s mostly junior (resident) doctors. Nurses do them in emergency

so basically hospital policy is they can’t use the ultrasound so they call you in so you can get it via guided access

They used to pull me as a STUDENT NURSE to start IVs on tough patients. Offered me a resource position a year out from graduation.

I wish my residents would spend time doing more useful things than placing peripheral lines

As an MD/RN, this is a huge problem that we are going to have to address collectively soon

Im glad I work in a country where IV access is usually the task for the junior docs. Its invaluable experience when you end up in these situations

Cannulation is NOT about years of experience. It’s about technique, repetition, vein reading, and confidence under pressure.
So I don’t believe that if 40 yrs couldn’t do it means I couldn’t

ultrasound, get the darn ultrasound
I think I have a flag in my chart now that they should use ultrasound because the last 4-5 times they have just said "and someone will come with the ultrasound and start your IV" without even trying to do it blind first
it is dramatically better this way
