@the.teacher.chic: Episode 19: This one’s written for anyone out there thinking “must be nice”. Before you throw the “s” word at us - you should know, there are certain things we do not care about. “You have summers off!!” No, I actually have no paycheck between June 10 and September 10 and have to get a summer job like I’m 16.

My district divides our salary into 24 checks so that we get checks over the summer. It’s not a “paid summer”, it’s just the rest of our salary. We aren’t hourly employees. Most of us work our contract hours and then some. I can tell you, I often work 50-60 hours a week…my contract hours AND the time I take to prep, grade, and get caught up on paperwork and emails. These lesson plans don’t build themselves.

Retired from teaching after 30 yrs. Now I work a 9-5, no summers off and it’s so much easier!!! Don’t need the breaks like I did as a teacher. If you would like summers “off”,go teach. Teaching is so hard!

Three months? We get a month. We get out of school maybe the second week of June if we’re lucky but usually the third or fourth week and then we have to go back the first week of August. So I guess it’s good. You know we don’t have three months unpaid summer break, but we do have a month of unpaid summer right before we have to get right back into it.

I once got an “It’s all crayons and coloring.” They passed it off as a joke, but it was insulting! And this was from friends!

Not to mention all the work I take home weekly. A friend has every Friday off. Doesn’t go into work until 10:00. Yup and had the nerve to talk about my summers off. I always tell people it’s not too late for a career change. Shortages everywhere

I “taught” for 3 days at a high school and my husband had to literally lift me off the staircase and carry me to bed. You guys deserve MILLIONS on your paycheck. That is no joke.

Don't forget catching up on all the appointments you needed to do throughout the year that you couldn't take time off for. I'm not a teacher, but I work in classrooms. People have no idea how hard teachers work.

Not to mention if we were to add up all the hours that we work during the school year, it would equate to working the entire year with no summers off. We work many unpaid hours, cause we’re coming in early and staying late or working the book fair or chaperoning dances or doing parent teacher conferences or attending concerts or building play sets or chaperoning field trips out of ours… I could go on and on and on. We work more than 40 hours per week in an entire calendar year, but we do it in 9 1/2 months. Not to mention we allow the school district to withhold money so that we can get paid throughout the year so we actually have regular cash flow during the summer. Don’t get me started.

Nah I'll stick with working summers and NOT being a teacher. I barely have enough patience for my own kids. Definitely don't have the patience for other children 🤣
