Hear me out 🥲😅 I genuinely think some of the issues with people come from the way we talk and think about fanfiction today. Its shamed and put down as if every story isnt a mashup of the stories that have come before. Fanfiction is not only a pillar of the fandom community, but its also how many authors learn,parctice, and develope their style and skills. Books that were once fanfiction get looked down upon. As if changing characters, settings, decisions, and other small things isnt what makes each story have its own value. If we recognized the value of stories derived from other stories (like realistically all stories are) then maybe people could better comprehend that Epic Odysseus and mythic Odysseus are very different characters. Because so many characters are just classic heroes with a few changes. I hope I'm making sense 😅😅

I definitely need to read more classics and retellings bc tbh I don’t know much more than what’s described in the Riordan books, which definitely tiptoes around the issues you brought up here. And I totally agree with the Star Wars analogy though. Ahsoka is my favorite character, and even tho she’s a fan favorite, too many ppl seem to write her off as just Anakin’s apprentice, when she’s literally the main character in Clone Wars which the fandom supposedly loves, but then tends to only praise the Anakin focused episodes.

The focus on women/goddesses is largely what got me into Wonder Woman and even then there’s plenty of comic runs that are still too male centered (ex. Changing her origin from being made from clay by hippolyta to being a daughter of Zeus)
