A climate shock doesn’t affect every country, crop or supply chain equally. It reveals where the system is fragile. Indonesia’s decision to extend a major rice assistance program is a useful example of how far a physical shock can travel through an economy. Something can begin with a change in Pacific Ocean temperatures… then alter rainfall patterns… affect agricultural production… create pressure on food supply… and eventually influence government policy. Climate becomes agriculture. Agriculture becomes economics. Economics becomes policy. But there’s an important distinction here. A very strong El Niño does not automatically mean a global food crisis. The global food system is more resilient than it was decades ago. Agricultural productivity has improved. Supply is more geographically diversified. Inventories provide buffers. Major exporters can partially compensate for disruptions elsewhere. So the more useful question isn’t: “Will El Niño create a global food shortage?” It’s: “Where are the weak links?” Because El Niño doesn’t affect every crop equally. It doesn’t affect every country equally. And it doesn’t affect every supply chain equally. Instead, it applies pressure. And pressure reveals fragility. A resilient system absorbs the shock. A fragile system turns the same shock into scarcity. That distinction matters far beyond agriculture. Whether we’re talking about food, energy, semiconductors or AI infrastructure, the biggest economic consequences often appear where an external shock meets an existing bottleneck. The shock tells us what happened. The bottleneck tells us where it matters. #ElNino #Climate #Agriculture #FoodSecurity #Economics
