@fixradiouk: "I'm better off as a postman" 😤 Bricklayer, @iicollisonii, discusses the skills shortage and why the narrative around it is actually wrong... @mahoneybrick #constructionlife #construction #bricklaying #uktrades #fyp #tradiesoftiktok #british
They want the chicken but not the egg 😅 you get "skilled" people by training them and giving them experience. Nobody, absolutely nobody, starts a career as an expert.

People can’t afford it mate. I’m a gas engineer. 4 year apprenticeship at minimum wage from 17 till when the qualify is about £95,000. Good job we get that £1000 from the government as an ‘incentive’ 🤣

Been on site for an ages now, my pathway to learning the sparks trade is/ was shit. It’s deadlines deadlines, qualified sparks prefer to do the job themselves so they meet the deadlines and so it’s done fast. No patience to actually teach anyone. I see it all the time and it was same for me. It’s a bitchy environment, everyone just chats shit. I do the job for the money, don’t enjoy it whatsoever, it just fuels my savings and investments to get me out of it. Don’t see me doing it at 40yrs old.

This is where I think it’s a load of shit, i managed to get hold of an apprenticeship through sheer labouring on building sites and putting in a graft. It’s all about your willingness to get it.
