So im currently rewatching with my son who is watching for the first time, he had very similar questions. All I can say without spoiling is that this show does a pretty good job on not leaving things unanswered when it comes to characters and what happens to them.

Darryl and carol keep it clean. Like brother and sister. Michonne is a bad ass. Lori is Lori. Good luck with that. There is no real answer for what caused the outbreak. They kind of say it’s something extraterrestrial that was in the water but it’s not really defined. Morgan and Merle return. Morgan more so later and in fear the walking dead.
