Oh this is tea for me! But I also wonder if its maybe places like Indiana and NJ arent popular locations? I’d imagine larger places like Chicago, NY, Cali would have more variety

Im guessing the home program was their backup. They didn’t match their top choices.

anesthesia in general takes a lot of home students but like… 50% of the class should be the max

Hi! I’m a student at Indiana school of medicine and I wanted to share my input! Although a greater diversity in education experiences is great… Indiana has a HUGE physician shortage and a big thing the school is looking for is providers who will stay in state after training. (Especially within the rural and underserved communities) This just tends to be more likely if u train people who are from the area. Hope this helps :-)

I feel like that indicates the poor quality of the program, if anything. I go to a top10 school and we take take candidates from a wide variety of med schools

There’s actually a structural reason why some specialties seem to favor their own medical students. Programs aren’t formally “obligated” to take their own students, but there is definitely pressure to do so. Having a high number of unmatched graduates reflects poorly on a medical school, so programs often try to support their own students when possible—assuming they meet expectations.
That said, it’s not just about obligation. Internal candidates are known quantities: faculty have worked with them, understand their clinical skills, and feel more confident about their fit. That familiarity carries weight.
Competitiveness also plays a role. In fields like anesthesia, which are competitive but still accessible for U.S. graduates, strong internal candidates often have an advantage. In contrast, top-tier programs (e.g., Stanford, Harvard, Penn) receive a large pool of highly competitive applicants from across the country, so they can be more selective and less reliant on their own students.

🤷🏾♀️They’ve already worked, studied, researched & interned together. They’ve built rapport with the faculty over the span of 4-5years and those same members write recommendation letters to the deciding board. I worked as a admin at CUIMC in the anesthesiology dept for two years, so I know. It is what it is.

this feels nasty. like as a school, outside of the numbers looking good, why would you want to train JUST your own students?? how does the program grow if it's essentially just the same cycle of ideas?

It makes sense though doesn’t it. Hiring the candidates you know and trained? I don’t know much about the match process but this doesn’t surprise me.

Technically 2 are not from NJMS — RWJ is a different medical school. Still not great. And on that page alone I see 4 non-IU

lowkey all the new jersey med schools want students who plan on staying in new jersey so that could be a factor, still sus tho considering there are 4 other schools in nj

Medical students not matching is a bad look on the medical school. Anesthesiology is one of the most competitive specialties at this time. There’s med school classes with 30-40 people going into it. The programs realized they will have to take their own students or risk having them not match

Nothing sus my residency did the same for 3years. Ours was because our pd and chair was very involved with med student education they did a lot of work with her. Also when u know your med students wanna do a speciality and they are good why will u take a risk and have unfilled spots

I went to Rutgers for grad school and I know this is a fact. Rutgers med programs LOVE retaining students that hold NJ state residency and that attended Rutgers for undergrad and/or NJMS.
