wood is readily available, cheaper to buy and transport, and framing generally isn't done with 2x4s aside from interior walls. And you can build a lot faster with wood. Plus, funnily enough, wood is also a lot more resilient than people think. Remember, the US is WAAAAY bigger than a good portion of Europe, Illinois alone is roughly the same size as England or Czechoslovakia (Ik it's Slovakia and the Czech Republic now but I still call it czechoslovakia for simplicity)
