About Time for Justice is sharing part of co-founder Jacob Little’s story to support survivors across Australia. When Jacob was 17, he went through Brisbane Boys Yard — the Queensland equivalent of places like Malmsbury, Parkville, Turana and now Cherry Creek. During his time there, an officer came into his cell more than once. Jacob went through SA in a place where young people were supposed to be protected. The impact has stayed with him ever since, and he now lives with PTSD. Through years of standing with survivors, ATFJ has seen the same pattern over and over — many people carry long-term psychosocial disabilities like PTSD, anxiety, depression, BPD and schizophrenia. These impacts don’t disappear just because someone leaves custody. Understanding Your Options Many survivors want to understand what supports exist after what they went through. Some explore pathways like the National Redress Scheme or a personal injury process. Others look into supports attached to their superannuation — such as TPD (Total and Permanent Disability) or income protection insurance. These insurance policies can sometimes include a one-time lump-sum figure, depending on a person’s situation, especially when trauma or mental health affects their ability to work. ATFJ does not provide legal advice — but they help survivors understand what options might exist and connect them with the right professionals.
