@prideofbritain: Here’s a throwback to the year 2000, when the legendary Sir Michael Caine honoured Lieutenant Gareth Evans and Sergeant Balaram Rai, both serving with the Gurkha Regiment, who tragically lost their lives while clearing mines in Kosovo. They were the only British fatalities of the war in Kosovo. Sergeant Rai left behind his wife, Ashanta, and their four children in Nepal. Following a campaign by the Daily Mirror, the government brought Gurkha entitlements into line with those of the wider British Army, ensuring that Ashanta received a full pension in recognition of her husband’s service and sacrifice. Gareth Evans and Balaram Rai were posthumously honoured with a #PrideOfBritain Award in recognition of their courage and ultimate sacrifice. @P&O Cruises @Daily Mirror
