Do you suggest this with two dogs at the same time? I have two reactive dogs that my husband and I walk together and it can still feel overwhelming. They see to compete.

This is such great advice. I started giving our walks structure a few months back and my dog’s the best behaved outside that he’s ever been!! When we first get outside, I make that his time to sniff as much as he wants since that also goes hand-in-hand with marking and simply relieving himself. Then on our way back home (cause he used to get crazy when he realized the walk was coming to an end lol) we do lots of “touch” and stop/heel-sits. All throughout the walk, I’ll randomly say his name and reward him for looking up at me. We live by water so there’s lots of ducks and geese everywhere which gives us plenty of opportunity to exercise “leave it” or “look at me” or just rewarding him when he does walk past them with no reaction. We also do a sit and wait anytime we approach a curb and walk in heel to cross the street. Total game changer!

It makes sense and is a great starting point. We have a fearful reactive dog and live in an area where we can’t walk at any time without running into other dogs. We’ve been working on turning around when we see other dogs but sometimes just ping pong between spots. Also treats that were high value a couple weeks ago are no longer exciting. Help?

Ok this is super helpful and love it! Question- usually our normal walks include sniffing as we walk, we never actually get far because he wants to stop at everything. Should I only allow it during the sniffing and training sections ?

My GSD gets far too overstimulated when we go out on walks in the neighborhood (and have run into far too many off leash dogs to boot). Instead, I do something sort of similar to what you described at a park. Because he is a German Shepherd, I guide him in certain directions, but he just freely smells as we walk. In the middle, we stop at a distance from things that he doesn’t see often so he can observe them: people, other dogs, kids playing in a playground, etc. He’s a very vigilant guy, but he’s been making improvements - especially after making some adjustments at home.

What if our walks consist of my dog sniffing basically the entire time? I feel like we never have a “normal” walk. He is constantly sniffing and scanning the ground (also has a big problem with eating other dogs poop and other things off the ground). I have a hard time getting him to walk normally and on the sidewalk with me

I have to laugh. Getting a sighthound’s attention on a walk outside …. Is… well it ain’t. 😂 . Offer a side of beef…they don’t care…because, no, really there might be a bunny behind that bush just ahead! 😂
