My interpretation of the literary crisis was that it’s about reading comprehension and not standardization of grammar but this makes a lot of sense. I just want people to understand what they read

People who actually care about the literacy crises shouldn’t be criticizing AAVE, words like “gonna” “finna” or whatever else are still perfectly fine because language is ever-changing and defined by the people using it. Accents, slang, and dialects are all incredibly important to the history of any language. They indicate social norms and expectations, histories, culture, and more. The focus should be on understanding tone, inferencing skills, and critical thinking—functional literacy skills.

Hey zay I have a serious question, if language is whatever is understood by society, why isn’t gooder a word? Love your content btw

As an educator I OFTEN SEE people misusing “literacy” in this way. It’s heartbreaking.

sometimes I hear people choose to not use the past participle with a perfect tense and it’s interesting because i see it less as a mistake and more of an evolution in english

i don’t get why we defend “could of” when it is pronounced completely differently than “could’ve” and wouldn’t logically make any sense in a sentence. “I could of sworn” and “I could’ve sworn” sound totally differently and using “of” instead of “‘ve” completely misses the point of the contraction when writing. is the word “have” fading out of use there with those words entirely? please someone explain this i’m genuinely confused

i don’t mean to be facetious and i’m genuinely asking, based off of this information is it wrong to correct someone’s grammar??

grammar is a small part of literacy IMO. Comprehension and being able to use context is crucial.
