"Broke" means they contemplated what would happen if they might possibly have to take a tiny amount of money out of their savings account, especially given that their investment portfolio isn't doing as hot this quarter. My grandpa born 1940 claimed he was so broke he couldn’t even buy Christmas presents. He had over 150k in savings when he died. What is the point in being so cheap when you have that money at 86??? What are you SAVING FOR?
