I had a boss who put my attitude needed improvement in my annual review. I was floored and asked him what he meant. I had one of the highest customer satisfaction scores in the office. I asked if a customer had said anything. No, no customer feedback. I asked if I had said something offensive to a coworker. Again, nothing. So what then? Apparently I used to smile more in the mornings. I was like, you know I am going through a divorce and trying to figure out paying for an apartment and bills and daycare for my baby while I worked. I was exhausted. Absolutely drained. I would put on a friendly happy face for customers, but faking a smile at 630 in the morning to make my boss happy was not gonna happen.

After years as a professional, I found that the “tone” in emails is typically on the reader and not the author. When approached about this subject I asked them to read the email out loud to me and 100% it was their interpretation.

As an autistic person I'm always having to edit my emails over and over because people really do interpret directness as rudeness or even aggression. The amount of fluff you have to put in is insane. Makes me so paranoid.

"Can you show me, say, 3or 5 emails in which my colleagues have detected a 'tone'? I could use those as a guardrail and look for ways to improve." The boss will scramble to A) locate 2, and B) will not be able to point to aggressive tone. Look for a matching tone in the emails you receive. My 2¢.
