I agree with this take. On the flip side, I am very curious about Ryan Coogler's X-Files reboot that for greenlit because it seems like he's taking the concept and (hopefully) moving it forward. The reboots by Chris Carter with the original cast were mostly awful but I have hope for this as a huge XF fan.

I’ve been rewatching key episodes since the passing of Nicholas Brendon, and the show is such a time capsule of the late 90s-early 2000s, there’s no way this would have brought the same magic. Really what they should think about doing is a movie, not another series.

I think long running shows like The Simpsons suffer from something similar. The original writer’s sensibilities were shaped by shows like I Love Lucy, Star Trek, The Twilight Zone and so on. As the show aged, new writers were brought on who grew up watching The Simpsons and, ironically, that makes for episodes that are almost too authentically “The Simpsons”. If that makes any sense. I could see that familiarity with the original as a potential problem for the writers of the sequel.

Yes to all this. As a huge Buffy fan, I feel almost relieved. Sad for Chloe and Sarah and all the creatives involved - but as you said, most of these reboots are not great and I didn’t want Buffy to get that same treatment.

I also feel like the current hyperfixation on reboots traps those performers in legacy roles and doesn’t give them the artistic opportunity to do other things. Whether it’s type casting or not if they won’t let the show go you’re always known for that
