I would carpet it, save yourself the stress and crack on with other jobs. You can get some lovely statement carpets now.

cut the nose off the stairs and put wooden floor and stairs edging you be grab think this cost no more then 50£ to do ... hope this helps

Go carpet less work and you can buy carpet that the cat can’t grip, Iv got two cats and spoke to my local carpet centre and they recommended a certain type of carpet and Iv got it down in my stairs and upstairs hallway and they don’t touch the carpet at all

Hire a sandblaster (+ the guy who knows how to do it, no dig.. it's not super easy).. Unsure of the cost but he'll have it done within the day
