@fit.mom.carlyn: More things that will get your child ostracized in the classroom by their peers. A lot of these are things actually caused by the parents that are beyond the child’s ability to control. There are a few others that are hygiene related that will really help. Thanks to everyone who have commented ideas. #christiantiktok #teacher #mom #kids #school

As a hairy girl child that wasn’t allowed to shave my legs or armpits until well into 8th grade PLEASE let little girls start shaving as soon as they ask. Being the only girl with hairy legs in gym class (while I was already struggling socially) wasn’t a fun experience.

Let your kids have deodorant. I know they feel like the babies. But these fourth graders some need deodorant. The amount of times I had to talk to parents about this.

For acne, get them to a dermatologist if the general face washes aren't working. Don't let them go years with that problem.

Eyebrow grooming for little girls too! I had very heavy brows that my mom was “sentimental” about- I think it felt like loosing her little baby or changing the way God made me… but omg I just wanted my dang eyebrows shaped SO bad😅

And mind you— this is the bare minimum of parenting.

also mildewy smelling clothes! my mom would let clothes sit in a washer for who knows how long and would just throw them in the dryer when she remembered.

Wash their backpacks, lunch kits and jackets too. Some parents will not wash any of these for the whole school year and it’s glaringly obvious to other people.

Along with the other personal hygiene tips, CLEAN THEIR EARS!! If they have orange wax dripping out of their ears, everyone else can see it. You don’t need to use q tips, but a warm wet washcloth to clean it up!!

my mom put 90% of my hygiene burden on myself by 4th grade. I was a kid with poor time management and frequently would have greasy hair. I cannot imagine now that I'm a parent.

Also teach your kids not to tell others personal things, it will go around. It’s sad but true.

Fingernails! You have to help them clean them. And kids shouldn’t grow fingernails long until they learn how to clean them. We help them with their writing all day. We notice.

Don't try to save money by cutting your child's hair - hire a professional! I cringe seeing childhood photos of my really bad haircuts.

Also mildew smelling clothes, please do something about that. Adding vinegar to the washer has been such a help. That smell is the worst when someone leaves their clothes in the washer for too long before drying it

i second all of this. i also want to add that if your child comes home and complains about a one off minor conflict with a friend (to be clear, i’m not talking about bullying or someone your child has persistent issues with) and you contact their parents rather than letting the kids settle it, your kid gets labeled a tattletale. if it’s a small and non serious issue let them talk it out. they’ll be over it in a week unless you escalate it.

Speaking of clothes, try and make sure your kid’s clothing fits well, doesn’t have holes, is somewhat trendy, try to pick up a few popular branded items like Nike or Under Armour (even if they are thrifted or bought second hand) those things all matter and kids do take notice!

As a teacher I keep all the extras in my desk. Deodorant, Aquaphor, lotion, hair ties, q-tips, body spray, room spray… the list goes on!

I also send my daughter to school every day with a “care kit” in her bag. Spare pads, extra deodorant, flossers, hair ties- anything hygiene she might need through the day to freshen up or care for herself. We have one in her sports bag too. It has proven useful!

Cat litter boxes that are kept near their clothing absorb the smell… even if the clothes are clean!
