Private loans are not always higher interest, the current grad plus/ parent plus loan is at 9% and I took a private loan this year for my post bacc and it was 8.5%. The main issue isn’t really the interest rate it’s more so the repayment options aren’t as good since you can’t get public service loan forgiveness (most dentist wouldn’t qualify for it anyway) and it may be harder to drag out the terms longer for a lower minimum payment. The good thing is that you will be able to refinance your private loans after dental school, in the past people have gotten 3-4.5% on private loans it’s just interest rates are super high right now. I start dental school in August so I think I’ll be able to get a similar rate if not lower than the one I have now which is still lower than the grad plus. Try not to worry about it too much this is just new so we have to figure it out and the upperclassmen at your future school will be able to help you since they already went through it my entering class is the first to deal with it so we’ll see. Just keep working hard and I’m sure it’ll be alright 🙏🏼

Biggest problem is no IDR on private loans and you lose access to forgiveness strategies. IDR is the biggest thing if you wanna live your life, without it you have to grind to meet those 6-8k monthly payments and still have anything left over after loans and taxes. The ppl that elected to not use IDR when they just had to take out fed loans are the people who knew they were just gonna grind straight out of school. Best advice is to 1) go shadow docs who were in the army, navy, AF to get letter of recs for HPSP and 2) work/volunteer in a govt-funded clinic, or even better, a clinic in a rural area so you can get the experience to be competitive for NHSC. 3) Score high on DAT to get into cheapest school and get scholarship from the school with your acceptance letter. Apply for every scholarship you can find and make living expenses per year <20k when in school. If all 3 of those above options don’t work, you don’t really have a choice but to grind for like 10 yrs-ish to pay down the private loan portion. RAP plan interest subsidy might help a bit for the fed loan portion (idk the details of it) and you’ll def need to refinance your private loans to a lower interest rate but unfortunately it’s not going to affect everything that accrued while in school. It ~may~ reduce the monthly payment but idk how significant the reduction will be. Sorry 😞

Though there isn’t much Native American dentists out there but if your Native American and is interested in dentistry or ANY health profession please apply for the IHS scholarship!!! It pays for almost or up to all percent of tuition!

Vote. Vote for change. Get rid of the party that fights for the rich and maybe that new legislation will change in 2 years.

They reduced loan cap so dental schools stop overcharging for their programs and puts their students into insane debt. The legislation helps those who have to take out loans take out less (assuming this even works). If students cant pay then dental schools would be forced to lower costs but again we’ll see. Just keep working hard
