The Itterasshai ending contains two very important and profound messages. The first is the video where we see Mikasa dreaming and imagining what she would have wanted to do if she had met Eren again. The second message is found in the song that the author said was Mikasa's own voice. The song, when Mikasa opens her eyes, says "I'VE ALWAYS SEARCHED FOR THE PLACE WHERE I LEFT MY HEART, AND IT'S ALWAYS BEEN THERE NEXT TO YOURS." These words make us understand how deep her love for Eren was, and that Mikasa has always and only loved Eren throughout her life. that fence in itterasshai is a david lynch reference, in the film blue velvet (by david lynch), this idyllic, dreamlike, almost distortedly perfect scene of an unblemished, white picket fence and simple red roses in front of a clear sky is acting as a facade hiding a dark and nightmarish underworld, and in itterasshai, we see this scene right before mikasa meets with eren, basically confirming to us that this is mikasa once again, creating a perfect, idealistic fantasy of an alternate life with eren to escape to due to her internal grief :(

Im pretty sure the first few scenes are her dreams after the bird wraps her scarf, as shes a child in those. However the final scene shows mikasa as an adult,as shes now actually in the afterlife, with eren holding her hand.
