the ending wasnt fumbled. the entire point since the beginning was to save hina and marry her in the future, the only problem is that there were tons of obstacles that prevented takemichi from achieving that. and even when he did, he still chose to go back because his whole character is all about never giving up in the face of whatever problems he might encounter. hes such a selfless character, he couldnt accept mikeys sacrifice at the price of his happiness. so, he went back into the past time and time again to make things perfect, to not let anyone die anymore and grow up into decent adults with stable jobs, with no more ties to any sort of gang activity. the enemies he had in the past times he time-travelled eventually became his friends because he never gave up on anyone, especially hina. i admit it was underwhelming, but if you look back it was honestly the goal this whole time, we just got distracted by all the action and unexpected plottwists through out the manga.
