@adytum_official: The main study is Saxbe and Repetti (2010) from UCLA, published in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin. They had 60 dual-income couples give tours of their homes and describe them. Women who described their homes as cluttered or stressful had significantly higher cortisol throughout the entire day and higher depression symptoms. The men in the same homes were largely unaffected. The researchers suggested women may feel greater responsibility for maintaining the home which amplifies the stress response. The brain scan research is from McMains and Kastner (2011) published in the Journal of Neuroscience. They found that visual clutter competes for your attention and forces your frontal cortex to work harder even when you’re not consciously looking at the mess. Your brain is processing every piece of clutter in the background and it’s costing you cognitive resources all day long. Cleaning does reduce cortisol, which is why the 2am reorganize feels almost addictive. Your brain learned that organizing equals chemical relief so it craves it when stress peaks. Therapists now prescribe something called a nesting zone, one space you control at all times, to break the buildup cycle before it hits that breaking point. #MentalHealth #SelfCare #psychologyfacts #clutter #anxietyrelief
I stress myself out with my own mess but it's like idk what to do with stuff and I stay in a stress loop.

I know its a privilege and not doable for everyone but I highly recommend having a space that is just yours in the home. My husband and I each have our own office and its a space I can easily keep clean and decorate how I like without considering or consulting someone else. We have some shared style preferences that we use for the rest of the house but our offices are wildly different from the rest of the house or each other because we were each able to lean into a unique style we like and did not have to worry about the other person also enjoying it

Resigning myself to always being anxious because I’m so sick of being the only one who cares about removing clutter.

Curious how much singe people and their clutter is a factor to cortisol. My clutter is my own and so I know im the only person responsible but also the only person to be bothered. Does the level of ownership factor in?
