This crash data is interesting but I fear the real change is the adoption of smartphones. About 20 years ago is exactly when fatalities stopped decreasing. iPhone came out in 2007

cars in America have been getting so big, do you know anything about how that affects safety? it seems more dangerous for pedestrians and bikes, and I've seen so many videos of that happening

Ignore the US testing orgs and look for the (Euro) NCAP scores instead. The US testing orgs are stuck in the past!

Great post as usual. I think the biggest story here is the smaller disparity of good bs bad rating. Also the lack of enforcement remains a large problem.
