yes always find a way to be a traveler and not a tourist! support locally, no resorts and respect the locals. also no chemical sunscreen idk why people ignore this.

something about traveling somewhere to a resort where the employees of that resort would likely never experience that "luxury" has never sat well with me. I LOVE this

costa rica is such a good role model for sustainability. the part i went to was being ruined by cattle farming so they stopped it and let it grow back wild and gave educational forest tours

I thought it was unethical bec it promotes tourism from the US and ofc its illegally owned by the US which means the US would profit off of our visits too!

I have a friend who moved back to Hawaii after college (she’s native Hawaiian) & when she invited me out to come stay with her & her grandma I spent time volunteering with her family & helping out her community. Did she take me to some “touristy things” yes (I.e just some pretty places to go), but we mostly visited small businesses & I got to meet a lot of the people she grew up with.

I have volunteered at Finca Ganadito! They are truly doing amazing work there, and it’s a gorgeous part of Costa Rica. The owners Rob & Rebe are incredible.

I actually was apart of a class based on undergrad research and we had our personal projects to our main project maintaining on the indigenous knowledge based within Hawaii. We often discussed the importance of understanding the culture , especially not engaging with the western perspective from genesis to the Kumulipo. From all the research the biggest thing for us traveling to Hawaii was crucial to get the invite from Hawaiians and maintaining the cultural norms while volunteering and many different places! I believe volunteering is a step but should not be the whole process. However the trip was amazing because we were able to do a cultural exchange since it was a majority indigenous group and discuss our similarities with one another

Support locals and donate some time/ be a steward with them and we Hawaiians don’t mind

This is not applicable. Hawaii is an illegally occupied kingdom. Costa Rica is a sovereign nation. Hawaii is a US military base with a few resorts to cover it up. Costa Ria is a sovereign nation.
