@steven: The people building AI say it could destroy humanity… so why are they still racing to build it? To help answer that, I’m joined by Karen Hao. She’s someone who’s spent years speaking to the people at the centre of this race, conducting over 300 interviews, including insiders at OpenAI to understand what’s really going on. Karen is a journalist who has been covering artificial intelligence for years, looking closely at how these systems are built and what’s really driving them. As we get into this conversation, what becomes clear is how much of the story we hear about AI is controlled by a small number of people - and how difficult it is to separate what’s being said publicly from what’s actually happening behind the scenes. So, I asked Karen: - Who is actually making the key decisions inside AI companies? - Why are companies accelerating development despite the risks? - What do insiders say privately that they don’t say publicly? - How much transparency is there around how these systems are built? - What incentives are really driving this race forward? There are moments in this conversation where I’m trying to understand how much of this is about progress, and how much of it is about power. The more we unpack it, the more it feels like this isn’t just a technology story. It’s about who gets to shape the future, and how those decisions are being made. If you want a clearer view of what’s actually happening inside the AI industry and who is driving it forward, this episode is worth your time. #podcast #ai #artificialintelligence #business

Yes, AI is good but humans are bad so we need guardrails to prevent humans from exploiting AI to do harm.

Exactly. Why is Ai's main objective is to get rid of work for people. There are millions of applications to enrich lives, not worsen. Also what is the hurry?

its bad for the environment. What difference does it make if we have such great technology? If we don't have clean air and water because of it makes no sense.

You know, this is truly what I believe is the fatal flaw of capitalism. It doesn't encourage development of the best possible technologies. It produces and encourages the most profitable this form of technologies. And there is a difference. Sometimes they correlate. They don't always and not just profitable for everyone. Profitable for a specific group of people
And I think this is just the most obvious example of it, but you can look at things like reshoring, and I can't think of another example off the top of my head. But there are definitely others where capital's best interest and society's interest are not aligned and capital's interest is preserved over societies

This goes beyond technology — it’s about incentives and power.
Innovation often accelerates not just because of possibility, but because of competition, control, and influence.
Understanding who is shaping these systems is just as important as understanding the systems themselves.

I think the part we are missing when having these conversations is these are not unintended consequences. This is the intended result from the perspective of the AI owners….
