Buchanan Castle is the site of an earlier castle, historically owned by Clan Buchanan who are known to have held the estate of their name since at least 1231. On the death of the last laird of Buchanan in 1681, the castle and estate were bought by the 3rd Marquess of Montrose (of the Graham family). In 1836 the castle passed to the 4th Duke of Montrose. He married Caroline Beresford in the same year, and both were involved in breeding and training racehorses and during their time the parkland was used for horse racing. Buchanan became a renowned training establishment for racehorses; the names of their most successful horses were given to holes on the golf course which was later established on the park. In 1850 the original castle burned down, and the 4th Duke constructed the current building which became the official seat of Clan Graham. In 1936 the castle and grounds were converted into a hotel and golf course. During World War II, the castle became a hospital, and part of the golf course was used for farm cultivation to aid the war effort. One of the hospital’s patients was Rudolf Hess, Hitler’s Deputy Fuhrer. Rudolf had landed into Scotland in 1941 in an apparent attempt to negotiate peace with the United Kingdom. His next accommodation was the Tower of London. After the war ended the castle was briefly used as a school, however soon fell into ruin. In 1954, the roof was removed and with that the inevitable decline of the building began. #Scotland #castle #abandonedplaces #visitscotland #travel
