@rhettallain0: Here is your #physics answer - how do the scale readings compare for equal water levels? #forces #bouyancy #learningontiktok #TikTokLearningCampaign
does the weight of the ball matter? would a tungsten ball of the same size (but a different weight) cause a different result? also, what is the weight of the pull on the ball you did use without the water?

Dave Gobourn :
I don’t understand, the weight of the ball pushing down? The weight is held by the string, so how is it pushing down?

BRO YOU SAID 120ML OF WATER ON BOTH but it’s 120ML of volume (water + ball = 120ml) of course it’s the same but if we had 120ml of water in both, the booency of the ball would make it heavier

So if you were to lift the ball out of the water using the hook scale, would the right scale reading go down (no longer displacing water) by the same amount as the hook scale reading goes up?

Another way to look at it is to consider a column of water in both beakers that does not include the ball. The pressure at the bottom of the column is dependent on the weight of the water above it, which is the same in both cases.

Luckily, water is (essentially) incompressible, otherwise the result would be different.

David Harrison :
how does the pressure of the water thats vertically above the ball affect the hanging scale? is the hanging scale measuring the weight of the ball + the weight of the water above the ball - the bouncy factor?

Oh wow! I learned something today. I was completely wrong in my guess on the weight of the scales. I knew the water would lessen the weight of the ball - but didn’t think about equal and opposite. Very cool!! Thank you!
