This criticism , specifically aimed at the music promoted by MTV( one of his Hate Passions ) is valid . I have no idea what progressive rock was doing in the 80s so I can't speak to that. However , a lot of Zappa's favorite music , rhythm and blues and Doo Wop sounds kind of similar, which is how one identifies a genre to begin with. I think MTV generally just got under his skin , for very good reasons. Most of his issues with it were exactly on point vis a vis the music being a secondary afterthought. They were selling the visual , which the band had to pay for out of pocket in hopes of getting " seen" rather than heard.
