to add to this, you can’t “appreciate” a culture without knowing the history behind it. diminishing the meaning of cornrows and the history behind it to “JUST a hairstyle” is the exact OPPOSITE of appreciation. you can’t appreciate something while downplaying the historical context of where it came from and why it’s important.
