From my perspective, I’m not defending Cesar Chavez because I wasn’t there and can’t speak on something I didn’t witness. However, the way I see it is that speaking out now also raises questions. Based on what I’ve observed, it feels like there may be an element of guilt involved that sometimes when people feel responsible or connected to wrongdoing, they speak up before being held accountable and present themselves more as victims. That’s the impression I get from Dolores Huerta, that she may be trying to shift the focus toward her own experience instead of acknowledging any role she may have played. At the same time, none of this takes away from the importance of the women who were harmed, I truly hope those women receive the justice and recognition they deserve.
