@bruhmomentummoment: Skinning is the process of removing dead leaf bases that accumulate along a palm tree trunk as the tree grows, a layer of dry organic material that serves no biological function once the leaf has died. Left in place these dried bases create ideal conditions for insects, rodents, and fungal disease to establish themselves close to the tree's core, which can compromise the health of the tree over time. The material is also highly flammable, making untrimmed palms a fire hazard in dry climates where palm trees are most commonly found. Regular skinning keeps the trunk clean, reduces pest activity, and eliminates the risk of heavy dead material falling from height onto people or property below. #nature #trees #landscaping #Outdoors

There’s a reason huge roaches are called palmetto bugs in Florida. Also y’all most palm trees are in places where hurricanes hit. It’s very wise to keep these trimmed to reduce flying debris during storm season. So yes they should trim these in residential areas

It’s not necessary. Palms in the wild don’t have a team of arborists that magically show up to trim and clean them up. There is the issue of firm, though if the trees are near a structure.

Palm Trees here in Texas suck ahh. My neighbor had like four and all they did was create a breeding ground for cockroachs.

I’m gonna assume no one in this comments section lives around palm trees. Yall have no idea how much these weigh and how sharp they are, they can cause massive damage falling on people or falling on to the road where they can easily pop tires and fuck up your car. It also makes the trees incredibly flammable which is a liability in a state that’s on fire half the year. It’s not about the pests so much as it is an actual safety hazard not to have them trimmed in urban environments.

That’s a blatant lie. Dead petiole stubs on palm trees do not cause disease.

that's a lie. People don't because they think it looks good. it most cases its actually bad for the growth of the palm tree. if you see a palm with an hour glass shaped trunk. that's from improper pruning.

It is unnecessary in most palms and is actually environmentally harmful to do it especially if it’s not needed, since bats like to sleep in the dried out palms since we have don’t have much of any easily accessible caves for them to use, bats for reference are very useful since they are one of the only things that eat mosquitoes
