Chem student here! For anyone that wants to know why saltwater has a higher boiling point it all comes down to entropy. Entropy is the disorder of the universe. A fundemental rule of thermodynamics is that entropy is always increasing, which intuitively makes sense because there’s only one way for molecules to be organized in an ordered way (think about a glass bowl) and an infinite number of ways for the molecules to arrange themselves in a non ordered fashion (the shards of the broken bowl can be scattered in different ways) generally the vapours of a substance have more entropy (more ways to arrange themselves b/c they have greater movement) than the liquid form, but when we add a solute (salt) to the water it expands the number of arrangements the water molecules can have because now they’re arranging themselves around the salt. Because there’s greater entropy in the solution than the pure water and because the difference in disorder between vapour and the solution is smaller, it requires more energy to be added (resulting in higher boiling point) for the water molecules to break away from its liquid form and into its vapour form.

Who told you that that’s the reason why people do it? I have never heard that. It is 1000% to season your pasta.

Its partially for two reasons. 1: the pasta absorbs some of the water so it will now absorb the salty water, and 2: you should be adding some pasta water to your sauce to make it cling to the pasta better and this helps season the sauce evenly

Also the salt only increases the boiling point by +0.5 Celsius (that’s .9 freedom* units)

You are not wrong, from a chemistry standpoint presence of impurities (in this case salt) raises the bp of water.

I knew it was for taste, but didn’t know it effected the time to boil. Thanks, I learned a useful tip today. 😏
