The historical reason behind this is kinda interesting! Basically they numbered all the streets and then wanted to increase density but everyone was used to the numbers, so they just added the extra "types" in between instead of renumbering everything

If new roads were created after the main streets and avenues were created, they follow this convention. Learned this lost in Flushing once. West to east goes street -> place -> lane. North to south goes Ave -> Road -> Drive -> Terrace
