I remember being on a mission trip and the youth pastors daughter admitted to right then and there that she would sneak episodes of Wizards of Waverley Place at her friends house when she wasn’t allowed to watch it. Weirdest moment to witness cause the mom wasn’t irrationally angry (more upset at like the daughter going behind her back on something) but also I was like “huh? Alright, I guess this is happening.”

I think you could argue that media just uses magic as a vehicle to explore human nature. For example, stories about aliens often have more to say about us as people than genuine speculation about alien life. It's the same with stories about magic and its users, typically the consequences of power and control.
