genius or a waste of $$$? 👇🏼 When we saw that REI launched their own version of a bear canister, we RAN to get our hands on it. I feel like there are only a couple of brands dominating this space, and there definitely appears to be a few things that could be improved on with the current products available. So, what do we think? PROS: • great price point to allow you to be able to buy two sizes in one. Basically cuts the cost in half that you’d usually have to spend, which makes getting on a trip not quite as expensive • really cool that it changes sizes so you don’t have to choose (I feel like it can be really hard to pick a size). It also gets smaller on your trip if you have eaten most of your food (I’ll show this in a future video) • clear so you can see the food inside CONS: • heavier (over 1 lb heavier than the large bearvault) • so hard to open!!! The tabs are tricky for my fingers to fully push in. Sometimes it’s easy, sometimes I literally cannot do it. I read through reviews online and it seems to be 50/50 on this (maybe 60/40 towards being hard to open). I honestly am wondering if the manufacturing had some sort of error to where some are easier than others. The tabs can be hard to push in and the threads seems to catch or are just REALLY tight. I do have to say though, as I have opened and closed it 50+ times at home, it has gotten easier. It seems like the threads have worn down a little bit and we adjusted the tabs from the inside to make them easier to open. So I’m hopeful that on my next trip, it will not be quite so hard! Overall, I think this could be a really amazing product for a lot of people if you’re looking to save $$$ on backpacking gear and don’t mind a little extra weight. I’d love to see what they can come up with for improvements in the coming years. I’ll report back with a full trip report asap!! Have you tried this canister yet?
