If someone meets you and asked you where you're from their asking you what country you were born in. If you ask me the same question, my answer is London England.

My grandpa didn’t pass down Yiddish so his kids could assimilate and it still makes me sad. Luckily my family has preserved most of our traditions but it’s sad to be missing the language component

generational heritage and the passing of the torch. we are shaped by our ancestors who came before us. our generational heritage good or bad, shapes our genetics and our growth to who we is today

the big difference is claiming that you "are" e.g. Irish, German, Italian, etc., and claiming that you are descended from whichever that is. the former is offensive if you don't have a connection to the culture, the latter isn't. it's important to recognise that e.g. "Irish-American" culture is very different from "Irish" culture. if you're just speaking to other Americans it's a bit more understandable because e.g. "Irish" has been used as a shorthand for "Irish-American, but you shouldn't use that terminology internationally, and the internet is an international space

Claiming a culture that you do not belong to due to your ethnicity feels dismissive of people actually belonging to that culture with a different ethnic background. It quickly plays into the hands of white supremacists and we don't like that.

The problem unfortunately persists somewhat, my family as well as cousins were discouraged from learning to speak Spanish as educators at the time had warned our parents that growing up bilingual could confuse us somehow.
