“In order to do this thing. You need to do it efficiently!” No. You can inefficiently harvest crops. You can inefficiently mine. You just make less progress. Not none.

but then by that logic, how can anything we have nowadays that we never had 200 years ago be invented if we couldn’t imagine it? doesn’t make sense when u put it that way

As much as I like you, in this case you are wrong. Look up leather production in difficult conditions and you will find methods known to us for thousands of years. This example of making planks is also pointless because precise cutting is possible even with the most improvised tools🥀💔

We’ve literally found 30,000-year-old twisted plant fibers and weaving impressions in clay. The middle steps exist in the archaeological record.

Hiya, economist here. The explanation for why this occurs is because of an idea which occurs in nature and society called “emergence”. In essence many small things coming together to make something big. No one knows how to invent anything we use in daily life, people invent specific components and materials of it and groups of people, businesses, yada yada, take those components and make it to make something better. The ship example you used, the people who built the ships didn’t make the planks, the people who made the planks didn’t make the saw, the people who made the saw didn’t make the wood or the iron. The people who made the iron probably didn’t dig up the soil with iron deposits within it. People all had little ideas and it came together

I feel like everyone thinks they invented these all at the same time, which let me tell you, they didn't.
It was many people whose ideas travelled.

as a boatbuilder I can speak on the shipbuilding.
primitive man:
hmm that log floats, let sit on it and cross river.
hmm.. we have stone axes lets carve out the midlle and we can sit inside..
hmm.. if we split a log with our axe mulitple times it makes a simple plank. attach a plank to sides=more space.
over time: more planks less log:
the"log" became the keel and the boat/hull itself became the planks. all with very simple tools tools

is funny because there are millions of techniques lost in time, i remember seeing a documentary about medieval houses in which one the ones making it actually rediscover a type of cement because of the specific humidity of the dirt in the region
