@coachbsummers: Most young athletes aren’t underperforming because they’re not working hard… they’re underperforming because they’re under-fueled. If you’re training daily, playing a sport, and trying to grow… 2,000–3,000 calories isn’t going to cut it. 4,000–6,000 isn’t crazy in the right context. It’s necessary. You can’t build size, strength, or performance without giving your body something to build with.

My tennis player and I go around about this all day. My speech, protein= fuel for your body. Don’t eat enough and you turn out of fuel. It’s like letting a car run out of gas and trying to keep going.
