The Controversy: To get those "free" Tuesday tickets, you have to prove you are an Illinois resident with a valid photo ID. The Reaction: Critics are calling out the irony, pointing out that many of the same political circles involved in the Center have fought against mandatory voter ID laws, claiming they disenfranchise low-income residents. Now, those same residents have to produce an ID just to visit a "public" park space that used to be theirs for free. 3. Gentrification & Displacement The South Side communities of Woodlawn and South Shore are on edge. Rising Costs: Rents in the immediate area have been spiking far faster than the city average. The "Benefits Agreement": For years, activists fought for a "Community Benefits Agreement" (CBA) to ensure long-time residents wouldn't be priced out by the "Obama Effect."
