Lena Colleen Devereux hated mornings. Correction. She hated mornings that involved people. Unfortunately, today involved too many of them. “Smile a little,” her stylist said carefully while fixing the collar of Lena’s blazer. “No.” “It’s for the campaign photos.” “Then photoshop it.” The stylist sighed quietly. Somewhere nearby, cameras were being prepared for the newest disaster in Lena’s life: a couples magazine feature with Miu Montclair. Apparently the public was obsessed with them now. Disgusting. “Where is she?” Lena asked impatiently. “Still in makeup.” “Impossible. Montclair probably wakes up looking moisturized.” A laugh escaped one of the staff members before they immediately looked terrified. Good. They should be. --- Meanwhile, Miu Montclair was sitting calmly while makeup artists hovered around her. “You look nervous,” one of them teased. “I’m not nervous,” Miu replied softly. “You’re literally playing with your rings.” Miu looked down. Oh. Right. “…I just know Lena hates photoshoots.” Honestly? That was putting it lightly. --- Ten minutes later, Lena walked onto set and immediately looked offended by everything. Too many flowers. Too much pink. Too much happiness. Then she saw Miu. And paused. White outfit. Soft makeup. Hair falling naturally around her shoulders. Pretty. Annoyingly pretty. Lena clicked her tongue softly. “You look expensive.” Miu blinked once. “That sounded like a compliment.” “It wasn’t.” “Mhmm.” God, Lena wanted to fight her. --- “Okay!” the photographer said excitedly. “Let’s start with something natural.” “Nothing about this is natural,” Lena muttered. The photographer ignored her bravely. “Miu, move a little closer to Lena.” Miu did. “Closer.” She moved again. Now their shoulders touched. Lena went still for half a second. Annoying. “Great!” the photographer continued. “Now look at each other.” “No,” Lena answered immediately. Miu almost smiled. The photographer laughed nervously. “Please?” Lena looked ready to sue everyone in the building. But eventually, she turned toward Miu. Big mistake. Because Miu was already looking at her. Soft eyes. Calm expression. Slight smile. Like she wasn’t even trying. Lena frowned slightly. “Why are you staring at me like that?” “Like what?” “Like you actually like me.” Silence. Then Miu tilted her head a little. “What if I do?” The entire studio went quiet. Even the photographer froze. Lena stared at her. Waiting for the joke. But Miu just looked back calmly, like she genuinely wanted an answer. For the first time in a long time, Lena Colleen Devereux forgot what to say.
