Look into how to raise chickens grain free ! It’s way easier than you think and chickens will be super healthy plus you don’t waste money on feed and big ag companies !

m biggest concern is that I've heard that keeping chickens attracts rats?! have you had any problems with that?

Get yourself a big metal rubbish bin to keep chicken food in to keep rats away

Keep an eye out for red mites, scaly leg mites ect. Worming should be done at least yearly. Sometimes they need more protein than what’s in the chicken food. Dog roll or mince is good for that. They will moult around spring so you won’t get many eggs but still have to feed them. There poo tells you a lot of information. Don’t for get grit for calcium.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d totally do this too but isn’t it funny how we’re prepared to pay hundreds for a coup, the chickens, their food etc but not $7 for some eggs.

My parents give their chooks a handful of cat biscuits every fortnight too! You can also bake/air fry their shells (be ware, they STINK hahah) to crush and add to their feed too. They recently got an automated door (looks like a cat door) so they don’t have to go out in the rain and dark to open/close the door and for when they go away for a night or two and have it set to 7:30am open, 9pm close

get a rat bait trap to put under the coop (the chickens can't get into it), but yes they do attract rats .

How did you stop them escaping? Are their wings clipped? We’ve just got 3 chickens but want to extend their free range area
